Koelhuis becomes the first Dutch district to join the Global Cultural Districts Network!

At this year’s Placemaking Week Europe, Koelhuis District Eindhoven became the first official Dutch cultural district to be part of the Global Cultural Districts Network (GCDN).

Emerging on the east side of the city of Eindhoven, Koelhuis District Eindhoven is an ambitious urban renewal project focused on immersive experiences, media art and contemporary culture. Leveraging talent in the innovative Brainport region, the district builds on Eindhoven’s reputation as the design and tech capital of the Netherlands. Known as Brainport’s Immersive Experience District, Koelhuis District will function as a Living Lab—offering affordable housing and makerspaces, in combination with large-scale culture and tech hub Koelhuis Eindhoven. The hub serves as the venue for the official opening of Dutch Design Week 2024.

By joining GCDN, Koelhuis District will create active connections within the network of cultural districts worldwide, reinforcing its position as a cultural and tech hub, connecting the Brainport region with the rest of the world.

“At GCDN, we have been following the development of the Koelhuis District and its programs closely since the very beginning. It has been great to witness its continued eveolution and we are thrilled that Koelhuis is joining us as the first Dutch cultural district.”

— Gregorio Lucena Scarpella,

Director of the Global Cultural Districts Network.

“Far too often, artists and makers who create a place do not benefit from the value they add. With the Koelhuis District, we want to leverage the power that artists and creatives have to build a place and make them a part of the future, too. We want to give them a sustainable place for future developments and
provide the missing infrastructure that supports the creative community’s position at the forefront of the immersive experiences industry.”
